Above are some of my annotations from “In Praise of the F Word” by Mary Sherry and the TED Talk by Carol Dweck. The top annotation is from Mary Sherry’s article. In my annotations, I highlighted keywords that I thought were being used to set the tone. In the margins, I wrote what I thought the main purpose of the paragraph was. In the bottom annotation of Carol Dweck’s Talk, I highlighted the question marks because I thought her use of questions was important. I wrote in the margins that they were important because they make people think about the topics when they might not have if she just mentioned them. It also makes the audience think the topics have something wrong with them because she is questioning them like she does. This is how I usually annotate. I identify key terms or topics and make a note on them. I also write a little note on the side summarizing the main idea and topics of what I just read. When I have annotated in the past, it has been quick and usually on a short poem or an excerpt from a book or article in class.
